High-speed Connectivity
Description
This evening will have two parts. The first part will be hosted by Rutger Smink and will cover new developments in 'copper' connections. The limitations of these (mostly cable or PCB) connections, which occur especially when sending high data rates over longer distances, will be discussed in detail. This will require a brief introduction to the field of "Signal Integrity", as it is central to optimising a digital (copper) connection.
The second presentation will be given by Michiel Boermans and will cover the domain where optical connections are taking over from copper connections.
Modern supercomputers are now already equipped with optical communication around the microprocessor cores. Computer racks have also recently been connected to each other via a new kind of cable: an active optical cable. How all this works? We will give you a hint
