Meetings on Solar Fuels
Description
SVP DO NOT subscribe to this advance notice. The date of the final meeting is 17 March. You can register for this meeting, called "Solar-PV 2050, part 1"
In the EU-2050 Power Lab lecture series on the expected electricity supply, EU-wide in 2050, using the European Climate Foundation study, a number of interesting topics emerged.
If we want to achieve a CO2-free, low-fossil electricity supply, we cannot escape the situation that during the summer months there will be an excess of electricity, especially by decentralised, small-scale and centralised, large-scale PV systems, with a shortage in the winter months. At the moment, this is already occurring to a small extent but in the future it will really come into play. That is why so-called back-up power plants are already needed now to supply the necessary electricity in case of shortage.
However, there is no good solution yet for the surplus in the summer months. It became clear during the lectures that it is desirable to convert the excess electricity in summer into a so-called solar fuel, which could be hydrogen or methane or methanol, for example.
This solar fuel should then be stored and used in winter to generate electricity again
We plan some meetings in the first half of 2014 where these issues and possible solutions will be discussed.
The meetings will take place around February and April 2014.
Further announcements will be made via email and the KIVI NIRIA website.
