New year meeting KIVI-EL and lectures
New Year's speech ing. Richard van Heijningen Vz. KIVI Electrical Engineering:
The president warmly welcomed the Elektrotechniek department members and speakers present and wished everyone best wishes for 2018. He then indicated the areas of focus, on which the Electrical Engineering Department is focusing. This is in line with the policy development plan, as adopted at the 2015 AGM. The implementation process has started, but this is going very slowly, as there is a shortage of manpower. He further gave an overview of KIVI-EL activities in 2017 and planned KIVI-EL activities for 2018. Members, who would like to take this up, are most welcome. Furthermore, a maximum term of six years was indicated from the Members' Council for board members.
As a result, two board members ing. Pim Klaver and ing. Richard Groenewegen. The chairman thanked them for their commitment, organising many activities and presented them with the KIVI commemorative medal.
Members were then asked to make themselves available for a board position or to join an activities committee. The activities committee KIVI-E South is very active and those in the other regions are being set up.
Then it was time for the speakers. Mr ir Sietse de Haan will replace Mr Jaap Willems ATEPS B.V., who has been felled by the flu, who is co-founder of the Platform EnergyStorageNL, his lecture is still to come.
Theme "Energy Storage":
The first presentation on the theme "Energy Storage" was on "Concentrated Solar Power in the energy transition"Â by ir Sietse de Haan of the Association of Solar Power Plants (VZKC), he gave an up-to-date insight into the construction and commissioning of goot-scale solar power plants worldwide. The level of development of various types of solar power plants, with also the possibilities of large-scale energy storage (for short and long periods) are impressive. For news on the current development of solar power, see the most informative website: http://www.vzkc.nl
For a current overview of all CSP plants around the world see http://www.nrel.gov/csp/solarpaces/ and http://www.csp.guru/
These solar power plants are well suited to respond to the need for local energy storage to secure the excess of renewable energy generated to cover periods, when demand is higher, than generation. The stored energy is easily transported by means of high-voltage connections to regions or countries that have a period of energy shortage. The generation kWh price of this plant is already far below that of fossil fuel generation. Even in Denmark, it has proved profitable to build a low-cost CSP. Therefore, the motto is "Build as much CSP as possible in solar areas".
The second presentation by Mr ir Wiebrand Kout Elestor B.V. further discussed local situation, In what situation and when is electrical energy storage, economically profitable? What are the principles and criteria for a decision model for a company to switch to the purchase of a battery?
This showed, that the capacity and duration of the period depends on the severity of the critical business process, the magnitude of the consequences and the amount of damage, which the interruption in the electricity supply gives, compared to the cost of purchasing and maintaining a flow battery for storage of electrical energy. For this purpose, he founded the company Elestor B.V(Electricity- Storage).
Based on his experiences (15 years ago), Wiebrand Kout developed the"Hydrogen Bromine Flow Battery". This fuel cell like flow battery is constructed from sustainable and low-cost permanent materials. After an analysis based on economic grounds, applications mainly take place at companies, which want to keep their business process independent from the electric grid infrastructure (smart-grids).
Networking:
Networking took place between the programme sections and after the presentations. With the turnout at this New Year meeting (more than 40 people), this meeting was successful and worth repeating.
The presentations can be downloaded under "Documents", as pdfs:
Description
At the Electrotechnology Department's New Year's meeting, chairman ing. Richard van Heijningen will outline the progress of the renewed policy of the Department of Electrical Engineering with follow-up steps in 2018.
Furthermore, speakers will outline feasible solutions for "Locally" organising and realising the storage of "sustainable energy".
At the end of the programme, glasses will be raised to the new KIVI year with once again the annual theme "Circular Economy") and networking can start.
