North/South line Amsterdam
Description
Reason
The North/South line will connect Amsterdam North with Amsterdam South. The travel time from Buikslotermeerplein to Zuid station is 16 minutes.
The metro will offer an alternative to the often overcrowded trams and buses. There is no room in the city centre for more trams and buses. There is room underground. The North/South metro line will ensure that Amsterdam becomes and remains more accessible. Good accessibility is essential for the economic development of Amsterdam.
The metro line will transport 185,000 passengers a day quickly, safely and comfortably right through the centre of Amsterdam. During the day, the new metro line will run every five minutes. In rush hour, every four minutes. The ride from north to south currently takes 31 minutes. With the arrival of the North/South line, the duration of the ride will be halved to 16 minutes.
If the metro line is extended to the region (Schiphol, Purmerend, Zaanstad), passenger numbers will increase to 300,000 per day. The Noord/Zuidlijn fits in with the national policy to offer the Amsterdam region an alternative to the rapidly growing car traffic.
Some details
The Noord/Zuidlijn will be 9.7 kilometres long. The metro will stop at 8 stations. The average distance between stations is 1.2 kilometres. The line starts above ground from Buikslotermeerplein station in Amsterdam North. The metro then runs in a sunken basin and after Johan van Hasseltweg station, the metro continues underground, passing under the water of the IJ River. It then continues its way underground through the city centre and the Pijp area. The underground part of the route is 7.1 kilometres, of which 3.1 is a bored tunnel. Only in the central reservation of the A10 Ring Road between Europaplein station and Zuid station does the line return above ground. Here, the North/South line connects to the existing network of trains, buses, trams and the existing metro line
