Description

Royal SMIT Transformers "a top technology company".

We offer you a visit at this early hour to one of the oldest transformer factories in Europe. A factory also that is well known to the right-minded "Power Engineer" and often evokes fond memories.

History
Willem Smit & Co's Transformatorenfabriek N.V. on Groenestraat in Nijmegen was officially established 2 May 1913 by Willem Benjamin Smit, who had founded the "Electrisch-Licht-Machinen fabriek" in Slikkerveer in 1882.

It was one of the very first companies in the Netherlands to sell electrical appliances and lighting. In 1900, they started building transformers. As early as 1908, there was serial production. Due to lack of space, he instructed the head of transformer manufacturing, Ir. Thomas Rosskopf, to find a new location for his fast-growing company. Rosskopf ended up in Nijmegen, an old acquaintance for Willem Smit because he had already installed electric lighting there in 1886, powered by a small power station. This made Nijmegen the city with the first municipal power plant in the country.

Over 100 years later, the time-honoured plant is firmly embedded in the SGB-SMIT Group. The slogan used by the SGB-SMIT Group is "Partners in Power". A slogan that the companies have every right to use and is based on craftsmanship, experience, technological know-how, reliability and economic efficiency. As a group, they are able to develop and manufacture power transformers ranging from 50 kVA to 1,200 MVA and voltages up to 800 kV. The product range includes oil-filled transformers, cross regulators, cast resin insulated transformers, compact substations and compensation and series coils.

Presentation
The presentation and subsequent factory visit is promising and extremely interesting and is entitled:
"Design and Production of Power Transformers"

It goes without saying that a brief introduction will touch on the basic principle of a transformer. It then discusses the issues involved in the development and manufacture of modern power transformers.

This will include an explanation of:
- the core (magnetic circuit): materials, manufacture and type;
- the windings: materials, impedance, voltage regulation and type;
- high voltage isolation: controlling high voltages in and between windings and to earth;
- short-circuit currents and forces: generating and controlling short-circuit forces;
- the final assembly: active part, drying process, tank etc.;
- cooling and temperatures: type of cooling, occurring temperatures;
- noise: core and winding noise;
- transport

09.00 - 09.25 Reception with coffee/tea.

09.25 - 09.30 Welcome.

09.30 - 10.30 Lecture "Design and production of power transformers" by ing. Erik de Groot. There will be an opportunity for questions.

10.30 - 11.30 hrs Production in practice. Tour of the factory in three groups.
