Direct current (DC) is an emerging technology in the built environment. Almost all electrical appliances run on DC and DC is also supplied when generating renewable energy with, for example, solar panels. Yet we still see very few buildings equipped with DC systems. Almost all appliances are powered by an infrastructure based almost entirely on alternating current (AC) power. Developments in power electronics meanwhile make it possible to safely set up installations in and around buildings at different power levels for DC use. DC installations are also more efficient than AC grids and have the ability to integrate intelligence (data). Technically, it is all possible but where does that make sense and how should we design those DC installations?
Inspiration tables for researchers, entrepreneurs and clients

In early February 2017, KIEN, TVVL, OTIB, UNETO-VNI and Stichting Gelijkspanning Nederland will therefore organise Inspiration sessions on opportunities for DC application in the built environment at three locations across the Netherlands. The core of these sessions: sharing knowledge with science, industry and (end) users. Where are we and which concepts are fruitful enough to think about further? We then develop these together in the next phase, the Innovation Table.

The Inspiration Sessions take place at three different locations in the Netherlands where an innovative application of DC is already being put into practice. That way, there is always a date or location that fits into your busy schedule.

On 7 February, we start at CityTec in Alblasserdam (South Holland). CityTec is a frontrunner in applying DC in public lighting.

A second session will take place on 8 February at ConnTech in Elst (Gelderland). ConnTech specialises in flexible smart buildings, facilities and shops in which the application of (smart) DC voltage is becoming increasingly important.

Finally, on 9 February, we will be guests in Noord-Holland (Rijssenhout) at Vreeken Sierteelt, where the existing AC-based assimilation lighting has been converted to a DC-powered installation.During each of the three sessions, we will take a closer look at the application of DC in horticulture, in public spaces and in buildings, and we will discuss the future of DC in the built environment with the participants

Speaker(s)

What will you go home with?

At the end of the session, you will have:
- Insight into the social and technical relevance of DC;
- Insight into the main trends and developments and a vision on the future of DC;
- An overview of the challenges and barriers to the application of DC;
- A good idea of the possible application of DC in your specific situation.
