Description

The lecture will be given by Dr Marion Matters-Kammerer.
The terahertz (THz) frequency range lies between infrared optics and millimetre-wave electronics. Terahertz waves can see through clothing and packaging, and they make it possible to identify specific substances through spectroscopy. Due to the short wavelength, imaging systems with submillimetre resolution are possible.
THz technology has found new applications in recent years in airport security equipment, drug manufacturing and quality control for manufacturing processes. While the first commercial THz systems were still large and expensive, recent technical developments from electronics and optics have now emerged to enable very compact systems. These will enable professional and consumer applications in the areas of cancer recognition, chemical and biological production processes, security and communication, among others, and are therefore becoming increasingly important for business, healthcare and government.
This lecture will discuss the emerging applications and technological challenges of this new field
