The how/why of Solar Power Plants
Description
Solar power plants
For some years now, Concentrating Solar Power has been on an almost unstoppable rise. Although the Netherlands is not in the region where this form of renewable energy can be applied on a large scale, the speaker believes it is essential for real energy scenarios.
"Solar Power Plants" prompts many to ask "What should we do with a solar power plant in the Netherlands?" For a country where the sun only moderately makes its heat felt probably a legitimate question. However, there is more. We live in a world where future energy supply is also a central issue in all European countries, even the European Commission has its agenda in this. In this context, it is therefore looking at countries inside and outside Europe where more than enough solar heat is available to generate energy for Europe's energy needs.
The Association for Solar Power Plants
As an association, it promotes the Desertec concept, which means harvesting renewable energy where it is most obvious. By linking all that renewable energy in Europe and that in turn to the deserts in and outside Europe, you get a stable and cheap system. Above all, the association wants to raise public awareness of solar power plants as a possibility for generating renewable electrical energy. One wants to contribute to making this form of energy socially acceptable and support the realisation of Solar Power Plants (Power plants using Concentrating Solar Power). It therefore likes to contribute to the dissemination of knowledge about this form of energy generation. Furthermore, the association tries to interest politicians and policy makers in supporting the development and application of CSP and seeks International cooperation with foreign organisations in the field of CSP to join forces.
Solar energy and especially CSP is abundant and easy to harvest and is the most sustainable energy in the world. There are no residual products af other harmful side effects, on the contrary with the residual heat from the plants, clean (drinking) water can be made from dirty or even seawater.
Presentation
The presentation is promising and extremely interesting and is entitled: "The how and why of Solar Power Plants"
It will explain:
- principle of CSP power plants
- availability of this form of energy
- storage and transport of the energy
- political developments
- strengths and weaknesses of this form of energy
- geographical obstacles
- additional useful consequences

Speaker(s)
Sietse de Haan is chairman of the Association for Solar Power Plants. He studied physics and chemistry in Utrecht, but went on to teach physics just before graduating. He taught at various havo-vwo schools at home and abroad. For the last six years, his main focus at the association has been on energy transition
