Making property more sustainable Breda municipality
On 2 April 2003, KIVI visited Breda's then-new municipal offices, the design of which was based on various energy-saving measures and in which a large-scale thermal storage system played a crucial role.
As part of the series of lectures Sustainable Electricity 2050 (EU Powerlab2050) and subsequent programme Homelab 2050 the Department of Electrical Engineering organised a follow-up visit to Breda on 24 May 2016 to gather information on the city council's findings regarding the almost 15 years of experience with the CHP system, its energy use and the then target: to become 'Energy Neutral'.
After a short welcoming speech by Mr Michiel Driedijk of the Property Management Department of Breda Municipality, Mr Paul Paree of the Mobility and Environment Department of Breda Municipality presented the municipality's sustainability policy under the title Sustainability Vision Breda 2030
Next, Ms Judith van Nuland of the Property Management Department showed how the Municipality of Breda aims to have all buildings energy-neutral by 2044, via making two label steps in 2020, reaching label A in 2030.
Mr Thijs van Brakel, energy and sustainability adviser, presented an example of how the municipality intends to bring the large Sports Hall from label F to label A in phases, with measures already taken and still planned, and to make it energy-neutral as early as 2020, by which time aCO2 saving of 190 kTon per year will have been realised.
This has now resulted in a €11 million subsidy for over 17,000 panels for the companies in Breda, which have applied for this subsidy. See further on
Breda 'making metres' with clean energy generation
After these reflections on the future, Ms Saskia Hagedoorn, business manager Hydreco (part of Brabant Water), reported Hydreco's experiences with the WKO installation at the Chassépark. Although it is a flexible system thanks to the hybrid heat pumps used, it still took several years before it worked efficiently. When, after 10 years, the Chassé Theatre was also connected, close and continuous cooperation between Hydreco (source side) and Grontmij (building side) turned out to be extremely necessary to achieve an optimal situation again.
Despite all the problems experienced, Saskia concluded that KWO will be indispensable in the transition to 100% sustainable energy!
Finally, during the tour by two Hydreco employees along the WKO installation in the City Office and the wells in the area, people could have their fill of difficult questions about it.

Description
In October 2001, KIVI paid a company visit to Breda's then-new municipal offices.
The design was based on various energy-saving measures and the use of a heat and cold storage system (WKO) was crucial.
The results with regard to energy efficiency, energy savings and CO2 reduction and experiences gained will be presented.
During this visit, the sustainability policy of the municipality of Breda in general and the sustainability of the municipal property portfolio in particular will be discussed in detail.
In addition, the company Hydreco will give a presentation on the experiences with the above-mentioned thermal storage system.
To illustrate this, a short tour will be provided of some components of the Thermal Storage (CHS) installation.
