Description

Enercon is one of the world's largest producers of wind turbines. There are six manufacturing sites in Europe, as well as in Brazil and Canada. Its design principle is based on the so-called 'direct-drive' principle, which does not require a gearbox.

Enercon has delivered some 29,000 turbines worldwide, with a total capacity of more than 37 GW; in the Netherlands there are 344 installations, with a total capacity of 800 MW. Enercon employs 17,000 people worldwide.

The machines meet the latest requirements of grid operators, and can therefore also contribute to nest stability; in case of failures, they therefore help to maintain supply. The largest machines, with a capacity of 7.5 MW, are also currently being installed in the new wind farm near Urk. The rotor diameter is 127 metres, at a shaft height of about 130 metres.

In Aurich, we visit the mechanical department, the generator plant and blade manufacturing. The latter is done in a proprietary design, which claims a 10% higher yield. Finally, we visit one of these 'giants'.

The bus between Assen and Aurich is equipped with kitchen and toilet, so coffee/tea is served. On the return journey we will make a short stop for a simple yet nutritious meal
