VZKC: The (inter)national energy transition with hydrogen from the desert.
Theme: 'The (inter)national energy transition with hydrogen from the desert'
The Solar Power Plant Association organised a meeting to look at the possibilities of producing hydrogen from the desert.
You were hereby invited to a meeting of the Solar Power Plant Association (VZKC) "The (inter)national energy transition with hydrogen from the desert" with three very interesting speakers.
Paul van Son, President of Dii Desert Energy gave an introduction on how the Desertec plan evolved.
Paul studied at TU-Delft. He was active for years in management positions in the energy world in the Netherlands, USA, Germany, North Africa, Middle East (MENA) and Turkey. For Essent, he built up energy trading and renewable energy (green energy), among other things. Since 2009, he has been CEO (now President) of Dii Desert Energy, the Desertec Industrial Initiative, which implements the "Desertec idea" in the MENA region. Meanwhile, this initiative with more than 70 international companies has entered its third phase of development: Desertec 3.0, which helps the region become a zero-emission 'Power House' for itself, and in the long run also the largest supplier of green power and, especially hydrogen and derived 'green molecules', for Europe and the world.
Diederik Samsom, as chief of cabinet to European Commissioner Frans Timmermans, is in charge of implementing EU climate policy (EU Green Deal).
Mr Samson explained whether the EU has concrete plans to source hydrogen from the desert, and if so what exactly these plans look like.
Diederik studied engineering physics at TU-Delft. He had a long political career after a stint as a campaign leader and activist at Greenpeace. First as an ordinary member of parliament where he has been spokesperson in various fields, before eventually becoming party and group leader of the Labour Party. He achieved a resounding victory (38 seats). Together with GroenLinks, he initiated the climate bill. Now he is chief of cabinet of European Commissioner Frans Timmermans and in that capacity responsible for the realisation of the Green Deal.
Dr Jan Terlouw (90), successful politician and writer (Oorlogswinter), is still very much involved and a popular speaker. Dr Terlouw gave his views on the importance of the international approach to energy transition.
Jan Terlouw is a physicist and writer. As a politician, he was three times national list leader for D66, minister of economic affairs and commissioner of the Queen of Gelderland when major floods threatened in the Betuwe region. He then had to take the decision to evacuate large areas. He is still, despite his age, a popular speaker and guest on talk shows. He encourages young people to be active on climate issues and managed to persuade all political youth organisations of the political parties to take a united stand on climate policy.
The meeting was held on Friday 10 June 2022 at the House of Europe, Korte Vijverberg 5/6, 2513 AB The Hague.
The three presentations can be watched back via the VZKC' s Youtube channel
VZKC
After having devoted a number of meetings to Hydrogen from the Desert, it seemed time for the VZKC to take a look at what CSP could mean in the Netherlands in the context of the Energy Transition. To this end, VZKC wrote a VZKC Focus document(see Focus on the heat transition) in the spring, which was well received.
A meeting was held with the province of South Holland and several talks were held with the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency about usefulness and necessity. In addition, the engineering consultancy Sweco has shown interest and they have plans to translate the report into English.
Now the focus is on the joint approach to make the energy transition with hydrogen. The speakers will highlight the possibilities.
Corona measures
The meeting was held live without drastic Corona Measures. There was also a live stream are due to the limited number of seats in the hall.
Admission was free.
