There are already some electric ferries in the Netherlands. What are the challenges for scaling up? Is there enough grid capacity along the banks of waterways? How are electric ferries doing abroad? Thijs van der Schaaf of Holland Shipyards presented the state of the art. Joining the panel were Mathijs de Graaf of GVB Amsterdam (which already operates some electric ferries) and Paul Broos of ElaadNL.

At the past Elaad Webtalk on Thursday September 2024 / 12:00 - 12:45, Thijs van der Schaaf (Holland Shipyards) Thijs van der Schaaf of Holland Shipyards presented the state of the art regarding the electrification of ferries.
During the web talk, it emerged, that there is already a whole fleet of electrically powered springs by now, and many other electrically powered vessels are about to come into operation, especially for container transport.
Automatic sailing of springs via a predetermined route is also a reality. Who knew? In this, springs are electrically recharged during a stop for loading and unloading with an automatic loading device.
Thijs also listed the challenges the yard has faced and managed to solve in the innovation process.
The panel was then joined by Mathijs de Graaf of GVB Amsterdam and Paul Broos of ElaadNL, both gave insight into future plans, opportunities and the need for further standardisation and norms.
