Various energy experts, including those from ECN, have reflected in the Energy Transition Forum on ground rules for the energy transition in the Netherlands. Four transition routes have been formulated, which differ in the way in which the Netherlands aims to reduce CO₂ emissions and the way in which we distribute the costs. Providing insight into possible ground rules helps to see how the various current debates - from coal-fired power stations to gas production - can be viewed in conjunction. And it does so on the basis of basic choices about steering and burden-sharing: are we going to steer towards less CO₂ or towards energy saving and renewable generation? And will we share the costs collectively or will everyone pay individually? The four resulting transition routes each have their own transition world with arguments for and against.

The results of the Energy Transition Forum are freely accessible via the interactive Energy Transition Thinking Tool.

In addition to an overview of transition routes and arguments, the Thinking Aid also provides insight into the current energy supply using interactive visualisations.

A position guide is also available, giving users insight into their own preferences.
With this tool, policymakers, politicians, corporate strategists and interested citizens can sharpen their own judgement on ground rules for the transition.

Not by presenting a single solution, but by making it clear that there are choices to be made for the energy systems in the Netherlands.

This is needed as a prelude to clear political choices on the energy transition beyond the Energy Agreement.

A team of specialists from KIVI-Elektrotechniek set up the KIVI programme EnergyNL2050 by investigating the highest possible CO2 reduction in 2050 and making the energy systems in the Netherlands more sustainable.

This will give 4 seminars in after year 2016 and spring 2017, organised by KIVI Elektrotechniek with third parties such as ECN, CE-Delft and Ecofys in cooperation with the USI (Utrecht Sustainability Institute).
