Sustainable Innovation at Tata Steel
Description
Tata Steel in IJmuiden employs 9,500 people. They produce and supply 7.5 million tonnes of high-grade and clad steel in coils, along with design, technology and consultancy services.
The IJmuiden site is known for producing high-quality steel for various applications.
In particular, IJmuiden steel is processed in the automotive, construction and packaging industries. The material is further used in batteries, pipes, industrial vehicles and in white goods, such as refrigerators and cookers.
As is well known, producing iron and steel is one of the most energy-intensive processes in the world. But steel also offers a range of opportunities for innovative and sustainable applications.
How does a modern iron and steel producer deal with the sustainability challenges of process and product?
The company excursion on 7 December next will provide some answers to the above question.
- In an initial presentation, Gerard Jägers will give an overview of sustainability and energy saving in the production processes. To motivate employees to work even more energy efficiently in IJmuiden, Tata Steel has launched the YmGreen campaign. Image of the campaign is the green handprint. The aim is to reduce CO2 further, improve energy efficiency and raise awareness of the effects of energy use on the environment. The campaign produced dozens of very useful ideas.
- The second presentation is about the HISARNA, the new test blast furnace, which allows pig iron to be produced directly from raw materials. This can reduce CO2 emissions in iron production by at least 20 %. Hisarna is a world first and may be a breakthrough for the future production of iron and steel.
- During the tour of the company premises, a visit is made to:
- the casting rolling mill, which combines casting and rolling of steel in 1 installation
- the ultramodern hot dip galvanising line 3. High-strength steel is produced here, the production of which, although requiring slightly more energy than conventional steel, offers unprecedented opportunities for innovative and sustainable applications
- the HISARNA plant under construction
