Description

Prior to this, from 19.00 - 19.30 hours, the annual General Members' Meeting will also take place, to which interested TME members are of course also warmly welcome.

The meeting will be introduced by ir. Martijn Lopes Cardozo MBA and fits in with KIVI's annual theme. Within this, TME has chosen to focus on the circularity of raw materials, following its theme year Energy in 2016.

Where energy is delivered every day, raw materials are finite. This introduction will again put down a challenge to KIVI members to think about future Technical, Social and Economic solutions. Results will be presented in autumn, at the KIVI Annual Conference.

About the content of the lecture:
Every year, more than 1 billion car tyres are thrown away and most of them are land fill, or worse, are incinerated, releasing large amounts of CO2. Tyre production is also highly polluting, as carbon black is used in large quantities. Producing each kg of carbon black requires more than 2.5 litres of oil.

This carbon black can be reused in products ranging from rubber to ink to toner cartridges and mascara. It has to compete in quality with the existing fossil fuel feedstock and it has to compete on price. Black Bear's carbon black meets these criteria. For every kg of carbon black they produce, they save 5kg of CO2. For the first commercial plant located in Limburg (Nederweert), that is the CO2 equivalent of planting 1 million trees!

One of the big challenges for circular economy projects is scalability. There are enough old tyres in the world to build more than 1,200 plants. Important here is to show good returns so that large amounts of infrastructure money can be attracted.
