Beatrix locks
Description
At the invitation of contractor consortium Sas van Vreeswijk, the Netherlands Geotextile Organisation, in cooperation with the KIVI Geotechnical Department, is organising an excursion to the widening of the Lek Canal and the construction of the third lock chamber at the Beatrix Lock in Nieuwegein.
To preserve inland navigation in the Netherlands, the Netherlands' largest monumental inland navigation lock is being expanded after 77 years. Due to the large number and larger ships passing through the lock, a 3rd lock chamber will be built and the Lek Canal will be widened near Nieuwegein. Soon, long waiting times will be a thing of the past and ships will be able to use three instead of two lock chambers. If you want to read more about the five special features of this project, follow the links below.
Geotextiles are used extensively in the project. For example as reinforcement in the temporary conveyors of the relocated Casemate.
Participating in the excursion is free of charge for members (NGO or KIVI Geotechnical Department). However, there are a few points of interest.
Participants can register through joop.groenveld@ngo.nl until 20 September. The number of participants is limited (40 persons). Registration will therefore be by order of entry. Full is full. Participants will receive further information after registration, including a route description and any personal protective equipment they need to bring along. We look forward to your registration with interest
