Summary of lecture

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary in 2019 of the Watchmaking course at Vakschool Schoonhoven, the idea arose in late 2017 to do something with that anniversary. With the advancement of time and technology in those last 100 years, watches have also changed. Actually, this period from 1919 to 2019 more or less coincided with the birth and use of the wristwatch. Before those years, until around 1937, mainly pocket watches dominated alongside some travel clocks as the only portable timekeepers.

Until around 1945, people trained as 'watchmakers' because that was the emphasis until then. Today's apprentices are fascinated by these branded mechanical watches with complicated movements; again, this is in contrast to the apprentices of the past, who had far fewer of these options because they were now less common.

In this lecture, we look back at what might be common for the average Dutchman. In doing so, we have tried to paint a picture of the watches that might end up on the workbench of a Dutch watchmaker between 1919 and 2019. Which ones were only briefly in vogue, such as LED watches. (LED= Light Emitting Diode, this is the name for the digital quartz watches with red numbers)

The great interest in watches in general in the last 20 years, leads many enthusiasts to delve into detailed sub-areas in watch history. This results in high prices for vintage watches, either in terms of brands or special technical developments. Efforts have been made to provide the widest possible alert to describe as accurately as possible the dating of models commonly found in the Netherlands. Improvements are welcome.
