The board of the KIVI Department of the History of Technology has the pleasure of inviting you to attend a lecture (organised, as usual, in cooperation with the Histechnica association):
Fabrieksschoorstenen in Nederland.

Summary of the lecture:
In May 1984, the 1928 chimney of Zuivelfabriek Salland was demolished, sometimes falling chimneys made the news, usually not, very common in those years. However, this chimney became the start for an investigation into chimneys from 1928.
From one year, 1928 and one company, De Ridder, the sleuthing expanded into ever wider research to result in a nationwide study of the phenomenon of factory chimneys in all its facets. Barnard set up the factory chimneys foundation STIF, www.stif.nl which became an instrument to pursue broad interest and thus preservation of special chimneys. The foundation publishes a newsletter twice a year.

A survey of the Netherlands' most important chimneys was commissioned by the National Cultural Heritage Agency. In this field, only a technical handbook dating from 1923 existed so for all facets of the research, Barnard had to define the framework himself. After 30 years of research, the results were compiled in the 462-page book "Fabrieksschoorstenen in Nederland" with 800 illustrations. Several reviews over the past year refer to the book as the standard work in this field.

In the lecture with PowerPoint presentation, you can learn about the many facets of the book, from the development of chimney construction from 1775, through mass demolition, to museum relocation of chimneys. From functional square to decoration with names and mosaics. On the companies that built chimneys and the materials used. From the 11 000 that were there to the 600 that remain today.
The book was co-funded by the Prince Bernhard Fund in 2017. Of the 1 000 copies, 815 are already in circulation. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase the book at a reduced price (€30 instead of the normal €35).

There is no charge to attend the lecture. As usual, you are most welcome to attend with your guests. Interested parties are (emphatically) requested to register no later than Saturday, 6 October via the KIVI website or by e-mail pthlmvanwoerkom@gmail.com.

Mr Arjan Barnard, Factory Chimneys Foundation STIF:

Arie Johannes Barnard (Arjan) was born on 23 April 1956 in Hardenberg. He was a board member of the Netherlands Industrial Heritage Federation (FIEN) for many years and has been founder and chairman of the Factory Chimneys Foundation (STIF) since 1997 www.stif.nl . He has been researching construction and builders of factory chimneys in the Netherlands since 1984 which led to the publication in 2017 of the book "Fabrieksschoorstenen in Nederland", the first public publication since 1923 on the subject. However, some specific sub-studies by fellow chimney researcher Pierre Geelen on the subject were published earlier
