Sustainable preservation of monuments
Description
Through restoration and repair, we maintain monuments for as long as possible. But are monuments also sustainable in environmental terms? Monuments do not seem energy efficient by today's standards. Conversely, current energy performance requirements often pose a major threat to appropriate monument preservation. This is because energy-saving measures such as façade, window and roof insulation, if implemented incorrectly, irrevocably lead to the loss of authenticity and cultural values.
Monument Preservation and Sustainable Construction thus seem to conflict with each other. But there are also remarkable similarities. Both have ambitions to save the environment and materials, both have long-term goals and both require customisation when implementing measures.
Fortunately, there are remarkable opportunities for harmonious convergence. This always involves customisation on a monument-by-monument basis: both in determining the cultural-historical values involved and the possibilities and limitations for preservation. The solutions ultimately chosen are also always building-specific and often go against what monument value assessors and sustainable builders assume. The lecture will show how this can be done differently and how special analysis methods such as thermography (thermal imaging) can be used successfully.
Speaker(s)
Ir. Evert Jan Nusselder (1948) is a restoration architect and building archaeologist. During his studies at Delft University of Technology, Department of Architecture, he was the assistant to Professor of Restoration, Prof C.L. Temminck Groll, for seven years. The study of Architecture-Restoration was preceded by 2 years of study of Mechanical Engineering.
From 1981 to 1998, he was senior architect/advisor in the Office of the Government Architect (Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment). From 1998 to 2005, he was head of the Conservation Technology Department of the National Office for the Preservation of Historic Buildings. He was co-founder and board member of Stichting Erkenningsregelingen Restauratie en Monumentenbehoud (ERM), umbrella organisation for executives in restoration. He was chairman of the Association of Architects Working in Restoration (VAWR) and is auditor for the GEAR accreditation for restoration architects. Since December 2005, he has had his own - private - engineering company MONUMENTENZORG. Since late 2014, he has been immersing himself in the as-yet undeveloped field of monument-specific thermography.
