TNO: research at the service of society
Description
The two world wars played a decisive role in TNO's history. The first planted the idea, the second ensured wide acceptance. After an arduous start-up period, the Central Organisation TNO was officially launched in 1932. There were resistances and doubts. Only during the Second World War did things take off. And after the war, TNO got the wind at its back. The organisation gained great respect and helped solve numerous problems. TNO was active in a broad field. Initially, the main fields of activity were industry and industry, food and nutrition, health and defence. Later, energy, environment and still later ICT were added.
In the 1970s, there were growing doubts about TNO's performance. Was TNO doing the right things and was it doing things well? Numerous committees got involved in these questions; a continuous stream of reorganisations was the result. Essentially one of the many symptoms of a rapidly changing world with technology and internationalisation as major driving forces.
Since 1980, things never really calmed down at TNO. But the work of passionate researchers went on and produced a continuous stream of interesting achievements.
The lecture will focus on the fortunes of TNO as a historical phenomenon in the Dutch knowledge infrastructure and a number of interesting research lines.
