EnergyStock: natural gas buffer Zuidwending
Description
Gas storage facility in Zuidwending
Since January 2011, EnergyStock (a subsidiary of Gasunie) has been operating a unique 'fast cycle' gas storage facility. The facility can switch between injecting and producing gas within 15 minutes at maximum gas throughput.
The facility is located in Zuidwending near Veendam. Gas is stored in 5 salt caverns at a depth of between 1,000 and 1,500 metres. The total maximum stored (working) gas volume is around 310 million m3.
Gas is pressurised and injected using electric compressors. When produced from the caverns, the gas is heated, reduced in pressure and dried.
Hydrogen project pilot plant
For the first time in the Netherlands, an installation is currently being set up where experience is being gained in converting sustainably generated electricity into hydrogen on a scale of 1 Megawatt (MW). EnergyStock and Gasunie New Energy have launched the 'HyStock' pilot project for this purpose at Aardgasbuffer Zuidwending. Large-scale production of green hydrogen is necessary to meet the 2050 climate targets. In the Netherlands, this so-called principle of power-to-gas is still hardly applied.
KIVI Oil and Gas Technology is organising an excursion to this unique underground gas storage facility and a presentation will also be given on the Power-to-Gas pilot plant .
