Bergermeer gas storage facility
Description
In the depleted Bergermeer gas field, TAQA Energy and Energie Beheer Nederland are developing a large gas storage facility that will be accessible to all market parties. Dutch natural gas production will slowly decrease in the coming years and the flexibility of the Groningen gas field will be greatly reduced around 2020. The development of gas storage is therefore necessary to meet winter gas demand. The Bergermeer field has been used for gas extraction since the 1970s and is now getting a second life as gas storage. Gas storage Bergermeer is an important part of the gas roundabout that should give the Netherlands an international role as a distribution country for natural gas.
The development of Gas storage Bergermeer is a major technical challenge involving drilling 14 wells 2.5 km deep, laying 38 km of pipeline and building an all-electric gas treatment and compression plant. To fit the project into its surroundings as well as possible, the installations will not be built in the Bergermeerpolder, but on an industrial estate in Alkmaar. The wells in the Bergermeer will be finished entirely underground, so nothing will be visible to passers-by
