The participants were very hospitably welcomed with an excellent lunch followed by a thorough technical explanation of the design and operation of the LNG terminal. The discussion was lively and all questions answered in a very pleasant manner. It was special that the participants were able to see the installations from such close quarters.

Description

The increasing need for natural gas requires additional imports. Against this background, N.V. Nederlandse Gasunie (Gasunie) and Koninklijke Vopak N.V. (Vopak) started developing the Gate terminal (Gas Access To Europe), an LNG import terminal, in 2005. The functions of the LNG terminal are: supply, a buffer between supply and continuous delivery of natural gas, vaporisation, and disposal.

Gate Terminal BV supports its customers with logistics services for storage and transshipment of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Large ocean-going vessels land LNG, after which Gate terminal transfers LNG to three storage tanks for temporary storage. At the request of its customers, Gate terminal can vaporise the LNG into natural gas and redeliver it to the distribution network for the European gas markets for industrial and domestic users.

The terminal is operational from 2011 and has a throughput capacity of 12 billion cubic metres per year (bcma) which can be expanded to 16 bcma in the future. In addition, Gate terminal has the ability to load LNG into smaller vessels and into tankers, also known as "small scale". These supply the LNG as a clean transport fuel to shipping and truck filling stations, among others.
