Shell Pernis Solvent De-Asphalting project

Meeting stricter IMO 2020 marine fuel requirements

From 1 January 2020, new emission regulations will apply to shipping worldwide. The aim is to reduce sulphur emissions from shipping by 85%. One way for ships to meet this is by using low-sulphur marine fuel oil going forward. To meet the expected demand for this specific fuel, a "Solvent De-Asphalting" unit was built for the Pernis refinery. A challenging project to integrate a new unit of this scale into the existing refinery. The lecture will focus on the strategies chosen to carry out this project and dwell on themes such as: contractor alliances, end-to-end processing, care for people and modularisation.
