Description

Biomass has been in the news a lot lately. Are biofuels sustainable, and doesn't biofuel production lead to rising food prices and accelerated tropical rainforest degradation? And if we want to avoid competition with food production, is there enough biomass? Should biomass be used mainly for biofuel production, or (also) for electricity or chemical production? What are second-generation biofuels?

The presentation will give an overview of biomass availability from the Dutch context. Also, the wide range of technical possibilities to use biomass for the production of heat, electricity, transport fuels and chemical products / chemicals will be outlined. The focus will be on techniques for those biomass streams, where there is no direct competition with food production. It will also focus on opportunities to increase the energy efficiency of the logistics chain and reduce its costs
