Baby ergonomics: Improve public health, start with baby products.

Babies are fragile and still developing. By optimising baby products ergonomically, babies can grow up to be mentally and physically healthy adults. That is the ideal of all parents who want the best for their child. Unfortunately, there are also unhealthy baby products on the market. Why are they unhealthy? And how can you consider both parents and babies when designing a baby product? The dilemmas in designing for babies are of interest to all designers.

Brecht Daams studied IO in Delft. She taught ergonomics and design to many I(P)O educators and has been an independent product ergonomics consultant(www.ergonomie.nl) since 1997. She advises on a wide range of products and also specialised in the ergonomics of baby products. She is author of the standard handbook 'Product ergonomics, designing for utility, use and experience', part 1 and part 2a of which are used by almost all I(P)O courses. Part 2b on cognitive ergonomics will be released in early 2023(www.productergonomie.info).
