Description

Advanced hybrid materials made their entrance in the 1980s, through the development of ARALL at TU Delft. Specific requirements for aircraft skins led to the development of GLARE by TU Delft and, more recently, the material CentrAl was developed by GTM for wing applications. This development will be discussed and explained. New developments of the material concept will also be discussed, such as optimisation for fire resistance, explosion resistance and possible applications outside aerospace, e.g. for anti-piracy containers. The layered structure of these advanced hybrid materials invite one to be creative in combining functions that would otherwise be difficult or impossible to achieve.

GTM Advanced Structures is a company that researches and develops these concepts. To this end, it has at its disposal a well-equipped testing and production department, in which it can manufacture and test both materials and structures, as well as develop prototypes through to small-scale production.
