®60: Toilet Design
Description
We all want a clean toilet nearby that looks and smells like it has never been used. Unfortunately, toilets on trains, along highways and in schools are usually far from attractive. Almost 40 per cent of the world's population has no proper sanitary facilities available, while we flush our toilets with clean drinking water.
At TU Delft, we conducted research with various mock-ups and with people from all kinds of target groups: the elderly, children, wheelchair users, the blind and visually impaired. Toilets for boats, for caravans, for slums in Africa and India, for Indonesia. Each culture has its own rituals. Urine and faeces are actually worth their weight in gold. You can make useful and usable things out of it. It will all be covered during this lecture.
Johan Molenbroek graduated from the University of Twente in 1978 in Biomedical Engineering. He then worked successively as scientific associate and associate professor at the Faculty of Industrial Design at TU Delft. His teaching and research include human factors and ergonomics, anthropometrics, product safety and inclusive design. He obtained his PhD on the relationship between anthropometry and industrial design. He then developed the website www.dined.nl as an anthropometric tool for designers. Currently, his research focuses on 3D scanning in relation to 3D printing.
Participation in the lecture is free of charge. Costs for dinner are € 20 (main course incl. two drinks), payable in cash.
