Many who read this title will immediately associate it with Arjan Ederveen and Tosca Niterink in their hilarious programme "Creative with Cork".

What it did not address is that cork is a beautiful, environmentally friendly, material that has a huge industry behind it. This industry is localised in Portugal where the largest concentration of cork trees can be found. This cork industry is under pressure.

One of the biggest application areas, bottle corks, has largely disappeared and new application areas need to be sought. This is therefore the subject of the doctoral research of Portuguese Ana Mestre, who will receive her PhD on the topic a day before this meeting.

Her title is "Cork Design: an action design intervention approach towards sustainable product innovation". An outcome of her project is a series of sample products designed by a selected group of designers.
