The experience of Intelligent Composites
Description
The term "intelligent composites" can be understood in two ways. Intelligence could lie in the designer or in the material itself. In the first case, we could speak of intelligent use of the capabilities of 'composed' materials. In the second case, we could speak of materials that can adapt in interaction with their environment.
Both perspectives will be discussed at this meeting.
Mark van Loon will introduce UTEC Composites as the host.
UTEC Composites is a relatively small company capable of realising large projects. Their market also tends to involve large projects, such as facade panels for large projects like the TivoliVredenburg building for which UTEC produced facade panels. This project was discussed earlier at the meeting "The experience of non-wovens" at Lantor in Veenendaal. Lantor's non-wovens are applied by UTEC.
Mark van Loon, director owner of UTEC, will this time focus more on the development of composites in general.
In particular, he will talk about "from idea to realisation", i.e. how does UTEC Composites translate a design idea into concrete products.
He will give a number of examples of this.
The second speaker is Eric van Uden of Solico. Solico is one of the largest engineering companies in the Benelux, specialising in the design and development of fibre-reinforced composites. One of Solico's many high-profile projects was the engineering of the composite facade of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Eric van Uden discusses the advantages and disadvantages of composite materials. What is the corrosion resistance, strength, stiffness, freedom of shape.
He uses examples to show why composite materials are chosen.
The last speaker, Marcel Smink is an artist in Arnhem. Characteristic of Marcel Smink are the large objects for public space he realised. Marcel Smink is not a structural applicator of composite, but someone who is very concerned with material choice and application. For him, it is not the material that is leading in his work, but the image he wants to realise. The material is always secondary to that.
The number of participants is limited to 60.
