Description

The impact of ethics on design.

Technology offers solutions to all kinds of problems. But, technology itself brings problems: from obstacles to use and acceptance to environmental pollution and loss of privacy. To what extent do designers have responsibility for the small and big ethical issues surrounding technology?

Such questions attracted Steven Dorrestijn's attention so much that he started combining his studies in mechanical engineering with philosophy and design history. His work since then has focused on integrating critical reflection and design. The result, part of his PhD, is the Product Impact Tool. Using a variety of examples, this tool provides an accessible overview of different ways in which technology affects people and society.

A better understanding of the impact of technology provides inspiration for human-centred design and naturally prompts reflection on the ethics of technology.
