Description

First, Roeland Lelieveld takes us through the start and development of Africa wood Grow. And explains what moved him to set up a forestry company in Kenya. And how Africa Wood Grow improves the local ecosystem and helps Kenyan farmers farm better.

Next, we brainstorm in groups on the future challenge of Africa Wood Grow and possible opportunities and scenarios to green more land and give more farmers a better livelihood

Speaker(s)

Roeland Lelieveld

All his savings Roeland Lelieveld gave up to develop his wish . After five years of research and entirely on his own, Africa Wood Grow (AWG) was founded in collaboration with a local partner. With AWG, Roeland is planting special 'termite-resistant' trees on a 320,000m2 plot of land in Kenya. In the long term, 10 years, the trees will be ready for building houses, for example. Until the time the sustainable forestry yields something, the costs will be paid by selling food produced among the trees such as maize and tomatoes. The impact of this project on the surrounding area is huge. The area Roeland is now redeveloping with sustainable forestry and growing vegetables was totally deforested and overused. Now this area is being rehabilitated into an area with stable food and timber production. In addition, the project provides employment and social cohesion for the local community. In less than three years, more than 8,500 trees have already been planted! And with through the foundation, local farmers learn to produce better and interact with nature. (source: dj100.nl)
