Doing business in emerging markets
Description
Thierry Sanders' career focuses on 'business for development'. Past experience in IT, finance and trading CO2 emission rights contribute to this. Thierry Sanders is founder and director of BiD Network, a foundation that prepares entrepreneurs in developing countries for investors and is responsible for an online network with more than 30,000 members. Since its establishment in 2005, BiD Network supported 9,000 entrepreneurs in writing their business plan and more than 300 entrepreneurs have started their businesses partly thanks to BiD Network.
On 1 December, he will give an exclusive lecture to 30 members of the Engineers Without Borders section. Here, he will engage in a discussion with the audience, on:
- Why is private sector development essential for poverty reduction? (Example Heineken Sierra Leone)
- Why does this require entrepreneurs, what kind of entrepreneurs? (Example Honeycare, rubber shredder)
- The importance of SMEs (NL versus Kenya)
- Where does technology and innovation play a role? The confusion of concepts
- What goes wrong (tech-push)? The BOP hype - and the pitfalls (distribution and demand) ? What do poor-consumers actually want (UvT study)?
- The technological edge of developing countries - mobile payments, for example. The number of developing country STEM graduates per year is greater than any ever graduated in western history.
- How BiD Network operates.
- Where engineers play a role? Coaching - Expert.
After the lecture, there will be a drinks reception where attendees can share their ideas.
