What is the potential of renewable energy for the rural electrification of Africa? In this fascinating talk, Dr Pinedo will describe the efforts made and achievements realised by the Joint Research Center (JRC) in the field of assessing renewable energy potential in Africa. She will also describe the data and tools available via the African Renewable Energy Technology Platform (AFRETEP) platform that can be used to asses your own energy projects.

Dr Irene Pinedo is a Scientific Officer at the Institute for Energy and Transport, part of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Comission. Dr Pinedo has dedicate the best part of the last decade to applying her specialism, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to mapping and analysing global renewable energy resources. Her past projects have included renewable energy resource assessments and rural-electricfication studies in Cuba, Latin America, Africa and Europe.
