Drought in the Netherlands: a hot issue!
Description
The past few months have been very dry by Dutch standards. De Bilt, too, has not seen so little precipitation in the past three months. Despite some showers having passed over the country again, the drought is expected to continue for some time. A good reason for KIVI NIRIA's Land Use and Water Management Department to organise a one-off meeting with experts on this subject.
In the meeting, we will look at the current drought from different perspectives. Prof Eelco van Beek, professor in Water Engineering and Management at the University of Twente, for instance, will give a general picture of drought and the issues surrounding it. Herbert Berger and Timo Kroon, both responsible at Rijkswaterstaat within the Landelijke Coördinatiecommissie Waterverdeling (LCW) go into the consequences of drought at national level and the role of Rijkswaterstaat. Finally, Renier Koenraadt of Oranjewoud specifically highlights the drought problem in the western Netherlands: what exactly is the problem and how can it be solved.
The meeting provides insight into the current drought, but at the same time outlines what may become a normal situation in the Netherlands in the future: drier summers and wetter winters. As a result, water will increasingly become a scarce resource in the Netherlands too. The meeting will be of interest to anyone concerned or interested in the current drought issue at various levels.
