INTERPLAY OF LAND USE AND WATER
Description
The Dutch Committee for Irrigation and Drainage is organising this 25th ICID European Regional Conference from 16 to 20 May 2011 at Martini Plaza in Groningen. KIVI NIRIA LAND USE AND WATERMANAGEMENT is one of the main sponsors of this conference. The international exchange on developments in European Deltas. The practical interplay between land use and water management is central. What can we learn from each other to deal with this in a sophisticated way?
Young Professionals
They are actively contributing to the programme. The author of the paper that appeals most to Young Professionals will receive an incentive prize from the Land Use and Water Management Department.
Flood protection essential
It is certain: flood protection is essential in delta areas. By 2050, almost 80% of all people will live in delta areas. What to do when the soil is sinking under your feet by 1 cm a year due to extraction for drinking water supply? For short term measure more than sea level due to climate change.
Drought in deltas more insidious threat
Experts indicate that drought due to climate change is a major threat to society. It concerns food supply and healthcare, effects on ecosystems, the (feasibility of) social efforts that are socio-economically necessary.
Securing food supply requires sophisticated water management
By 2050, the world population will grow by at least 2 billion people; to 9 billion people. Proportionally, more people will live in delta areas.
Agendering World Water Forum 2012
The conference concludes with an advice towards the World Water Forum from 12 - 17 March 2012 in Marseille.
Focus differs per day
This is a five-day conference with a different focus per day. It is possible to participate for one or more days. The programme is included in the final announcement (see www.icid2011.nl)
16 May 2011 Challenges in European Deltas
Is it about flood protection? Is it about drought? How to deal with land use? How do economic developments affect practical options? What can be expected from engineers? What innovation is needed? What can administrators and politicians do? What is the mission for the coming years? To what extent is there a shared vision on the issues?
17 May 2011 Sophisticated land use and water management in practice
This day will pass by practical experiences. Often there are conflicting interests.
18 May 2011 Learning from German experiences
Excursion to northwest Germany
19 May 2011 Learning from the interplay of land use and water management in the Netherlands
Conference sponsors will present recent experiences on the interplay of land use and water management in the Netherlands in workshops.
20 May 2011 Intelligently managing water global challenge
By 2050, the world's population will grow to 9 billion. More people will live in deltas. Drought is becoming a bigger problem for agriculture worldwide.Good interplay between water management and land use is becoming essential for food supply.
