National Environment Day 2024: Strong together for liveability
The circular interplay of environment, water and technology for a sustainable climate
We all need clean water, clean air, fertile soils and a livable climate. Through our environmental pollution, water contamination and climate change, we are amply exceeding planetary boundaries for a livable earth. Several interconnected sustainability transitions are needed to get back within those limits. The Water Framework Directive and the Climate Plan outline what is needed for this now and a new National Environment Programme is coming. A coherent approach is needed so that policy goals reinforce each other in implementation in those necessary transitions to a circular, sustainable society.
Climate, alongside biodiversity loss, now gets most attention as visibly the biggest disruptive factor. At the same time, environmental pollution still operates almost as a silent killer with a major impact on people's health and thus on quality of life and longevity. Water is increasingly becoming a contributing factor here, precisely because there is only a limited amount of available fresh water and because climate change and environmental pollution are putting increasing pressure on it. Every reason to comprehensively examine what is needed in these three main pillars under a sustainable Netherlands and how they reinforce each other in the implementation towards circularity. In particular, what does this also require from the new Environment Programme?
During the National Environment Day 2024 on 7 June, VVM, KNW and KIVI will join forces to find practical handles for the transition to a sustainable Netherlands. Come to the National Environment Day and help shape our future in a truly sustainable way!
In addition to three plenary sessions, organised by the KIVI departments Land Use & Water Management and Sustainable Technology, there will be a round of interactive sub-sessions focusing on practical feasibility on various sub-themes.
