Workshop: Penny wise, pound foolish?

Utility and necessity of measurement and monitoring in the management of infrastructure and especially flood defences.

By Ingwer de Boer (KIVI Land Use &Water Management) and Wouter Zomer (BZ Ingenieurs & Managers)

We have been managing infrastructure for thousands of years. So we have quite a bit of experience with that, so to speak. And you can rely on experience. Yet that infrastructure and its requirements also change, partly due to various social developments. Because of these changes, management needs to evolve along with it. The speed at which this takes place often differs per sector. The basis of infrastructure management is knowing how the infrastructure is doing.

Measuring and monitoring is indispensable here; this can be done with visual inspections and state-of-the-art technological systems. But where does the balance lie? What is useful, what is no longer? That is what we will address in this workshop.

Topics covered:

  • The value of measurement and monitoring on the quality of decision-making
  • Adaptation rate of state-of-the-art measurement and monitoring in the sector
  • Getting started in concrete cases
