Report Symposium and New Year drinks: Strategy and design for a climate resilient metropolitan region
9 January Hogeschool van Amsterdam
The Netherlands is a delta. The climate is changing, sea levels are rising and will continue to rise. The potential consequences of climate change and high and accelerated sea level rise for the management of the Dutch delta are great. Are our current spatial planning and water management strategies still tenable in the future, or are adjustments necessary? And what adaptations are these? How do we keep the Netherlands safe, liveable and future-proof? What will the Netherlands look like in 100 years? These questions formed the theme of Strategy and design for a climate resilient metropolitan region.
Built Environment students from the Hogeschool van Amsterdam incorporated Deltares' storylines (move along or protect) in their case study of the Havenkwartier in Amsterdam. They did this at the request of Deltares, Waternet, the municipality of Amsterdam and Rijkswaterstaat. The results were presented during the symposium.
During the symposium, Lisanne Corpel, lecturer-researcher at the lectorate Climate Resilient City | Amsterdam University of Applied Science, gave an interesting guest lecture on the need for climate mitigation and -adaptatie☔️. This with a nice poem about the link between the different graduate programmes and the tasks.
Students from the Applied Mathematics programme Hogeschool van Amsterdam presented their research results on the water level statisteken🌊📉 of the Noordzeekanaal and Amsterdam-Rijnkanaal.
The Built Environment students presented their results during a poster market, where elaborations were presented in several 10-minute rounds for each storyline.
The symposium ended with a panel discussion in which everyone indicated their main findings. Among the students, collaboration and integral working emerged most. Among the clients and field professionals, these were storylines, scale levels, green-blue infrastructure and green space. Furthermore, the clients expressed their appreciation of the process and the research results and what they will do with them in the future.
Finally, it was time for the New Year drinks at Cafe Fést. A great meeting with a good turnout of around 70 participants
