The importance of the North Holland coast
Description
Announcement
There are two priority weak links on the North Holland coast: the Hondsbossche and Pettemer Seawalls (HPZ) and the Dunes of the Kop van Noord-Holland (DKNH).
In August 2010, the decision was taken to reinforce the HPZ and DKNH with sand. The aim is to come up with an integral solution, fitting within the natural coastal system (building with nature) via an innovative call for tenders (government formulate your goal) and an early market approach. Adding an extra spatial component and nature development are the challenge here.
During the symposium, coastal morphology and the North Holland coastal system will be discussed in detail, as well as the process, recreation, economy and spatial quality.
Brief history
In the 1960s, the coast was hit by a number of storms, making the condition of the sea defences very critical. From the report of the dike reeve De Lange: "...the surf pounded so fiercely on the pilings that one could hear them creaking near the Gemeenlandshuis" (Aten, 1997)
In December 1863, a competition was held to find out how the seawall could be maintained in its current location and how it should be defended against the sea in the future. The competition was won by J.F.W. Conrad, engineer for the Department of Waterways and Public Works at Alkmaar. He was in favour of an open construction in which sand transport would not be hindered and the sand dike, although reinforced, would remain in place. However, this proposal was never implemented.
In 1870, dike grave C. van Foreest opted for a hard solution. And by 1877, the reconstruction of the seawall had been completed. Afterwards, it was raised several times. This choice provided safety for over 130 years, but from the point of view of coastal morphology, this plan was less successful.
Now we are faced with an important new choice that must also take into account a possible sea level rise and an integral approach from the point of view of the sandy coastal system. There is now an opportunity to come up with a solution that fits better with coastal morphology and a long-term vision.
