The Waal Weelde Project; yes or no?
Description
As part of the national programme Room for the River, dozens of projects along the rivers are currently being prepared and implemented. Along the Waal, two of those projects are essential for this programme and for the future, namely the dike relocation near Lent-Nijmegen and the de-poldering of Munnikenland near Woudrichem on the border of Gelderland and North Brabant. After all, the Waal has narrowed at those two places. The Munnikenland project, prepared for years, is so far into the decision-making process that the State Secretary has approved the National Land Use Plan for this de-poldering. A way back is hardly conceivable. Yet recently, there has been opposition to the plan and, in particular, the arrangement with nature functions. In the immediate region, voices are being raised in favour of giving space to agriculture in the new floodplain. Is this a consequence of the new zeitgeist or is this a justified claim? What does this mean for the progress of this project and the call for more flood safety? It is clear that the Munnikenland project has entered a crucial phase. This afternoon will be attended by supporters and opponents.
