What are the implications of Delta Plan 2008
Description
On 24 Nov 2008, the Water Management Section of KIVI NIRIA is organising an activity around the Delta Committee's 2008 advice. This will focus on the main features of the advice and what it actually means for the Netherlands. In particular, Delta Committee member A.P. Heidema will explain the role of the engineer in relation to the major water management task. However, innovative solutions not included in the recommendation will also be discussed this evening. Derk van der Velden (Derk van der Velden Landscape Architect), winner of the Afsluitdijk van de Toekomst competition, will discuss his winning design for a new Afsluitdijk. A feature of this design is that, thanks to resonance effects, it will be possible to discharge into the Wadden Sea for at least another 100 years, despite a rising sea level. The evening will end with a panel discussion addressing the future of water management in the Netherlands.
Prior to the activity, participants can visit one of the projects that will actually make the Netherlands a bit safer: the Room for the Rivers project Uiterwaardenvergraving "De Worp". The accompanying excursion will allow participants to get their feet in the clay for a while
