Description

The European commercial ship-design industry differentiates itself from the worldwide ship-design by developing complex and innovative vessels. In general, these vessels are developed based on a portfolio of designs, while new innovative solutions are developed by experienced naval architects. The current commercial environment requires to innovate and to develop new solutions continuously: but how can we manage this within the boundaries of design projects? And how are we going to manage this when we will lose a lot of this experience?

This PhD project concentrates on the design process of large, complex and innovative vessels. The results of this research have been applied in the development of the Ulstein Arctic Drillship and the Casco Enabler. Both projects, complemented by the academic background will be used to explore the challenges and solutions for controlling innovation in a Ship-Design environment
