Description

During this lecture, one of the world's best-known yacht designers Gerard Dijkstra, will give a talk on the extraordinary sailing yacht the Maltese Falcon.

The Maltese Falcon is the first yacht (and first ship) to be rigged with the DynaRig. A rig form consisting of unstayed masts to which yards are attached. Mast and yards rotate around a vertical axis. The sails roll in - and out of the mast. The DynaRig was developed in Germany in the Sixties as a solution to the high energy costs in merchant shipping. However, until the launch of the Maltese Falcon in 2006, it was never put into practice. The lecture described the thoughts behind the design of the Maltese Falcon and discussed the R&D that was needed to realise the DynaRig with manageable risks. This included the results of drag tank testing, wind tunnel testing, FEA analysis, testing with sailing models, destructive testing of scale models and much more. Finally, a look back at the 2 years of experience now gained with the rig over 70,000 nautical miles."
