Speaker: Bert van der Horst, Erasmus MC

Bert van der Horst is professor emeritus of Chronobiology and Health and still attached to the Molecular Genetics Department of Erasmus MC in Rotterdam as a scientific advisor. In recent years, research activities have focused, among other things, on how disruption of the biological clock by our 24/7 economy (shift work, "social jet lag") negatively affects our health and what we can do to reduce this health risk. A recent study in sailors of the Volvo Ocean Race has provided an initial impetus for developing biological markers that can objectively and quantitatively map sleep and biological clock disruption. These biomarkers are now being further validated and applied in the maritime sector to develop evidence-based (personalised) interventions that promote sustainable health and employability.
