KNVTS - KIVI lecture
Offshore working vessels are capital goods with a long service life. During their life cycle, they are often adapted to the capricious market conditions in the maritime world. Shipyards and their suppliers can usually cope well with this. The offshore performance of existing ships can sometimes be increased impressively.
Expansion with multiple functions can noticeably increase deployability for offshore installation work. Spectacular conversions completely transform cargo ships, ferries and existing offshore units. However, large-scale conversion of working vessels usually does not make them more beautiful.
Possible modifications are placed in an ascending series of complexity and execution risks. If handled properly, even the most complicated conversions can be a success. There are even ships that have been totally converted twice to accommodate new work at sea. Compared to new construction, successful conversions can save time and money.
This lecture is a follow-up to a short presentation given at the International Offshore Technology Conference in Houston in May. A more extensive version will be made available to Dutch interested parties in Rotterdam. Those there will get a say during the lecture. The speaker will offer them a choice from his range of high-profile practical examples.
