Winning with the Wind - Research for Steam Ocean Racing and emissions reduction
MARIN worked with Steam Ocean Racing (sponsored by Akzo Nobel) to provide performance predictions for their participation in the Volvo Ocean race. The work was an opportunity to not only cover the performance in calm water (as typical for sailing yachts) but to also cover the added resistance in waves in detail. The required methods to perform the work are also relevant for ongoing and future work regarding Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion on commercial vessels. The work for the Volvo Ocean and its relevance to Wind Assisted Ship Propulsion will be presented along with footage of the race.
