Description

On Monday 15 April, HAN researcher Edwin Tazelaar will defend his thesis Energy management and sizing of fuel cell hybrid propulsion systems at Eindhoven University of Technology. In recent years, from his appointment at the vehicle mechatronics lectorate, Edwin has been researching the energy management and design of fuel cell hybrid propulsion systems together with students, Nedstack specialists and HAN researchers.

Worldwide, people are looking for environmentally friendly alternatives to meet our demand for mobility. One of the possibilities
is to use hydrogen as a fuel. Via a fuel cell, the hydrogen is converted into electricity that powers car, bus or truck. Out of the exhaust comes water: cleaner is almost impossible.

The problem is that driving a vehicle has bigger and faster variations than a fuel cell can follow. Therefore, storage of electricity is needed, in the form of batteries. However, the question is how to fit these extra components into the vehicle. Unnecessarily large batteries make a vehicle heavy and costly, batteries that are too small reduce the lifespan of both battery and fuel cell. In addition, the control of the fuel cell (energy management) determines fuel consumption to a large extent. The PhD research focused on both these aspects, with the aim of increasing knowledge of the
mobile application of fuel cells and bringing their application closer.

The PhD research fits into a multi-year strategic research line of HAN Automotive Research in which the electrification
of vehicle propulsion is central. Questions from companies are taken up by professional researchers and developers who, together with students and lecturers, arrive at working solutions
