Another lecture from the CEO cycle will take place next Thursday, 8 January. The aim of this series is to stimulate and enthuse students and young engineers. CEOs of important companies, with engineering degrees themselves, talk about their experiences, how their careers went and how they became successful CEOs.
This time, René Berkvens is speaking. He talks about his career and about his work as CEO at Damen Shipyards. The chairman of the day is Prof Geert Dewulf.
René Berkvens, a marine engineer, has been CEO of Damen Shipyards since March 2006. Over the past 25 years, he has held various positions within the Damen Shipyards Group. He started in a sales position in Africa. From 1990 to 1998, he was sales director for the Americas, with special focus on setting up joint ventures (Cuba, Brazil) and further marketing of (Latin) America. He managed Damen Shipyards Gorinchem Shipyards (workboats) from 1998 to 2000. From 2000 to 2004, he was managing director of Koninklijke Schelde, the first defence shipbuilder in the Netherlands acquired by the Damen Shipyards Group from the Dutch government. During the same period, he was also responsible for Damen Shipyards' mega yacht building and ship repair activities.
