HVC Dordrecht
Description
HVC and its business units convert waste into reliable and affordable sustainable energy. Sustainable energy that helps to reduce the environmental burden caused by emissions from the use of fossil fuels while at the same time providing the same comfort for our heat (energy) supply at home and in offices.
We incinerate residual waste that cannot be recycled in one of our waste-to-energy plants in Dordrecht and Alkmaar. Every year, we process about 450 kilotons of household residual waste and about 450 kilotons of industrial waste there. The heat released during incineration drives a turbine that produces electricity. We also use the heat to heat houses and businesses via a collective heating network.
Electricity
We supply the generated electricity back to our owners, some 60 municipalities and water boards. This completes the circle: they supply us with residual waste that we convert into energy for them. They then use that energy to operate traffic lights and street lighting and pumping stations, for example. Electricity from our own waste!
Collective heat
We use the residual heat from our waste-to-energy plants to heat businesses and homes in Alkmaar and the AZ football stadium in Alkmaar. This way, HVC is a big boiler without producing extra CO2. HVC is working on a collective heat network in Dordrecht that will also make the Dordrecht waste energy plant a source of sustainable heat. Already, schools, businesses and homes at the Leerpark are heated by means of a WKO installation.
We get a tour of the waste-to-energy plant and then also visit the turbine. First there is a presentation and then a guided tour. During this, everyone is given a helmet and a safety vest. Altogether it takes about two hours.
It is recommended to wear easy footwear. There will be some stairs to climb. The excursion is therefore not so suitable for people with mobility problems
